Fishing and Freediving Charters

Welcome to my Gabon page.

26 June 2010 - I have started this page to keep folks back home informed on what is going on in Gabon. I am there for the winter and will be leaving SA on 30 June and returning at the end of September.

It is now 19 July 2010. Not much is happening here on the fishing front. I have caught four small cubera snappers and one reasonable one of about 5kg and two barracuda of about 2kg each. Unfortunately I am stationed 25km outside the reserve in the town of Mayumba. There is quite a large local population here and as has happened at most other populated areas, the fishing and wildlife has taken a beating from subsistence fishermen and hunters, poachers and illegal fishing trawlers. Really not much to see here apart from some really beautiful tropical rainforest. Even the forest is not at its best. It is the dry season here, believe it or not and the temperature, although not cold, is certainly not what one would expext on the equator. I guess this is about as close to winter as one would find on the equator. In addition to this, it is permanently cloudy and I do not exaggerate when i say that I have not seen the sun for more than a couple of hours since I arrived in Gabon. I have done a bit of an amateurish video of some of the scenes here. Not very interesting, but gives an idea of where I am. I will do uodates as and when something interseting happens.

25 July - I have loaded some photos. Been trying my best to get some exciting picture, but alas, these will have to do. Nonetheless they give an idea on what it looks like here. Click on the thumbnails for enlargements, or go to the photo viewer below to view the photos more quickly..

It is now 9 August 2010. My work in Mayumba is complete and I will shortly be heading for Iguela (Loango Nat Park). The weekend past saw me doing a 55km hike through the national park. Unfortunately photos never really tell the story as whilst I was struggling through some of the thick stuff, I never took my camera out of it's bag. I tried, most of the time to stick to open country and easy walking. I had to complete 45km in two days and would never have made it going through the thicker stuff. Nonetheless, it was an amazing experience to hike through some beautiful terrain with no company but your own thoughts. Once or twice the thoughts said I was crazy, but at the end, it was really worthwhile. A few photos below, or click on the link for quicker viewing.
